Vine Advisor’s Beginner’s Guide to Being a Wine Advisor

So you don’t know anything about wine? Or perhaps you have some knowledge, but you are hoping to brush up on your wine terms and lingo? Well here are some steps on how to taste wine while looking like a professional wine advisor.

Step 1: Filling and holding the glass

If you are pouring the wine out yourself, Vine Advisor would suggest filling a standard sized wine glass about a quarter full. Remember you are wine advisor sampling it and not loading yourself up on a night out. Once the wine is poured, Vine Advisor recommends holding the glass by the stem, firstly as this will make you look more of an official wine advisor, but it also serves a purpose so as to not warm the wine with the heat from your hands.

Step 2: Review the appearance

The next stage, and no it’s not drinking it quite yet, is to examine the colour of the wine. One rule of thumb is that it should not be cloudy or murky in its appearance, which suggests a lower quality of wine.

A wine advisor is on the lookout for crisp colours, but be wary of white wines which become darker with age and red wines turning a browner colour. These both indicate that the wine is not at its freshest, and are useful early indicators for what to expect. While studying the wine, feel free to give it a swirl as not only will this make you look the part of a real wine advisor, but it also allows you to view how the wine and sediment flow around the glass, while allowing the aroma to circulate.

Step 3: Smelling the wine

Now you are ready to smell the wine, and with a light swirl a professional wine advisor will nestle the glass close to the nose and then dive in for a smell. They will be looking for common scents such as floral, herb, fruits and spicy flavours, among others. Generally speaking, if the wine doesn’t smell great then it likely won’t taste great either.

Smelling wine can be difficult to begin with, but as you become a more experienced wine advisor it will become easier to pick up the differences in the aroma, which at times are particularly subtle. Wines that are older can be even trickier to smell, so don’t feel disheartened if you are unable to pick up anything at first.

Step 4: Tasting

Now comes the part you have been waiting for; the taste. An expert wine advisor will often take a generous first sip and then swirl the wine around the inside of their mouth with their tongue. Vine Advisor explains the reasons for doing this are that it allows us to pick up the different flavour profiles in our mouth.  The aftertaste is often different to the initial sampling, so don’t rush in for a second sip too soon, and instead enjoy the changing flavours on the tongue.

Tips for Finding the Best Vine Club

A vine club is a community of people who share your passion for this ancient and interesting drink. As with joining any community, you need to be sure that this is the right one for you. The wine club that you join should provide you with a platform to learn more and also allow you to contribute to the community with the knowledge you already have in relation to wine.

Here we set out to give you tips for finding the best vine club. We will look at different priorities and options one should consider when choosing a wine club to join and hopefully give you the impetus you need to start finding the best wine club for you.

Accessibility

You need to be able to easily reach the vine club that you join. When finding the best club, look out for ones in your area, or at least in the closest city or town. Having to travel far for a wine club might be fine once in a while, but if you want to attend one on a regular basis, it involves a lot of restructuring and costs that you probably don’t want to incur.

The good thing is that, if finding a wine club in your vicinity is not an option, you can join one online. Virtual vine clubs are becoming increasingly popular. When you sign up you will have access to a wealth of information and can even get products and samples delivered straight to your door. It is a simple way to connect with other wine lovers from the comfort of your home and, should you want to get out, there are often events arranged in association with these vine clubs.

The Right Level

If you are joining a vine club for the first time, perhaps you should start the process by taking a beginner’s wine tasting class. You need to ensure that the wine club you invest your time in is at your level, otherwise you will not gain what you are hoping to from it. For example, if you have an extremely broad knowledge of wine and you join a wine club for beginners, you will not learn anything new. On the other hand, if you join a group that is more advanced than your palate at this stage, you will not be able to understand or appreciate some of the more technical discussions and tastings that happen.

The whole point of being in a wine club is to enjoy it and learn and teach about your love of the drink. Belonging toone that does not offer the right challenge, or is too intimidating, will take away from that enjoyment. Choosing one at the right level means you can both give to and gain from a vine club.

Time

To get the most out of a wine club, get involved with one that fits into your lifestyle. An online wine club is easy to fit around your schedule and you won’t need to travel unless you choose to attend an event. If you would prefer to meet up with others, or host a wine club, it will need to be staged at a time you can commit to. If you work, go to school or have a family to look after, then evenings probably work best. For those with hectic schedules, think about an online club or one that meets once a month, so you can work everything else around it.

If you are able to commit to more time, then join a club that offers more activities. These activities could be a mix of wine tasting events, day trips, dinners and even visits and vacations to wineries and vineyards. Those taking a break from work, or who have grown-up children, or those who have recently retired are ideal candidates for these types of vine clubs. They really allow you to immerse yourself in your passion and learn as much about wine as possible.

There are many factors to consider when looking for a vine club. Do some research online and ask other wine lovers in your social circles for even more tips for finding the best wine club.
