Tips for Finding the Best Vine Club

A vine club is a community of people who share your passion for this ancient and interesting drink. As with joining any community, you need to be sure that this is the right one for you. The wine club that you join should provide you with a platform to learn more and also allow you to contribute to the community with the knowledge you already have in relation to wine.

Here we set out to give you tips for finding the best vine club. We will look at different priorities and options one should consider when choosing a wine club to join and hopefully give you the impetus you need to start finding the best wine club for you.

Accessibility

You need to be able to easily reach the vine club that you join. When finding the best club, look out for ones in your area, or at least in the closest city or town. Having to travel far for a wine club might be fine once in a while, but if you want to attend one on a regular basis, it involves a lot of restructuring and costs that you probably don’t want to incur.

The good thing is that, if finding a wine club in your vicinity is not an option, you can join one online. Virtual vine clubs are becoming increasingly popular. When you sign up you will have access to a wealth of information and can even get products and samples delivered straight to your door. It is a simple way to connect with other wine lovers from the comfort of your home and, should you want to get out, there are often events arranged in association with these vine clubs.

The Right Level

If you are joining a vine club for the first time, perhaps you should start the process by taking a beginner’s wine tasting class. You need to ensure that the wine club you invest your time in is at your level, otherwise you will not gain what you are hoping to from it. For example, if you have an extremely broad knowledge of wine and you join a wine club for beginners, you will not learn anything new. On the other hand, if you join a group that is more advanced than your palate at this stage, you will not be able to understand or appreciate some of the more technical discussions and tastings that happen.

The whole point of being in a wine club is to enjoy it and learn and teach about your love of the drink. Belonging toone that does not offer the right challenge, or is too intimidating, will take away from that enjoyment. Choosing one at the right level means you can both give to and gain from a vine club.

Time

To get the most out of a wine club, get involved with one that fits into your lifestyle. An online wine club is easy to fit around your schedule and you won’t need to travel unless you choose to attend an event. If you would prefer to meet up with others, or host a wine club, it will need to be staged at a time you can commit to. If you work, go to school or have a family to look after, then evenings probably work best. For those with hectic schedules, think about an online club or one that meets once a month, so you can work everything else around it.

If you are able to commit to more time, then join a club that offers more activities. These activities could be a mix of wine tasting events, day trips, dinners and even visits and vacations to wineries and vineyards. Those taking a break from work, or who have grown-up children, or those who have recently retired are ideal candidates for these types of vine clubs. They really allow you to immerse yourself in your passion and learn as much about wine as possible.

There are many factors to consider when looking for a vine club. Do some research online and ask other wine lovers in your social circles for even more tips for finding the best wine club.

A brief history of sparkling wine

Do you know your Champagne from your Cava? If not, then don’t worry, as we bring you a brief history of sparkling wine.

What is sparkling wine

Put in its most basic terms, sparkling wine is a wine that contains a considerable level of carbon dioxide which gives the wine its fizzy temperament. This can either happen as a natural fermentation process, or is artificially added to the wine.

The beginning of sparkling wine.

During the 1600s, Dom Perignon is generally credited with inventing sparkling wine, though ironically the bubbles within the wine were originally considered a wine fault. Dom Perignon and others spent considerable time trying to remove the bubbles, as they would cause some of the bottles to burst while being stored.

With the development of more durable bottles and corks, it wasn’t until some time later that people began to see the desirability of sparkling wine. By the 18th century, demand and production had increased dramatically and sparkling wine had put itself firmly on the map.

Champagne

It is nearly impossible to talk about sparkling wine without mentioning the most famous example, which is, of course, Champagne.

As the years passed, the Champagne region’s reputation experienced a meteoric rise, and it now produces some of the most expensive and sought after wine anywhere in the world. There are many other regions which try to duplicate the conditions of the Champagne area, and although all sparkling wine is often referred to as Champagne, it is only the wine from that particular area that can lay claim to the name.

Sparkling wine within western culture

Sparkling wine consumption has grown within the western world, linked with broad use in western culture.

When you think of a celebration, the cork of a sparkling wine bottle flying off while the foam spills out of the end is usually the first image to be conjured up. Toasting at weddings, or cracking open a bottle to celebrate a job promotion have now become ingrained in our culture and minds.

Even within sporting events, the winners are quite often given a giant sized sparkling wine bottle to shake up and spray on their team, ensuring that when we think of sparkling wine, we remember our greatest achievements and celebrations.

It is hard to see the demand or popularity for sparkling wine falling away any time soon, so let’s raise a toast to Dom Perignon and his accidental bubbles.

Sparkling Wine has its time!

Perhaps I’m not the only one to have had an unfortunate introduction to sparkling wine that left me insisting that I did not care for it.  My first few experiences with sparkling wine in my youth were ofa commercially successful, but not terribly sophisticated Canadian, sweet sparkling wine.  It tasted like sweet soda pop with an alcohol edge and it made me cringe.  This was followed by a not-quite-as-sweet sparkling wine that was heavily advertised on television with cheesy commercials.  It also had a bite that made me cringe.  I decided that sparkling wine was just not for me.

A few year ago, I was at a birthday lunch for a friend where sparkling wine was being served.  I took a reluctant first sip and was very pleasantly surprised.  It was a Prosecco and it was absolutely delicious!  So I’ve come to realize that a well-produced sparkling wine can be just as enjoyable as a quality dry white wine and I now look forward to a little sparkle in my glass.

Apparently I’m not the only one.  Over the last 10 years, production and sales of sparkling wine have increased dramatically, as higher-quality, dry sparkling wines have been developed.  These appeal to wine lovers of all levels of sophistication and have led to an explosion in popularity.  According to an OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) report, global production of sparkling wine has increased by over 40% in the last 10 years.

This increase is due in part to the fact that sparkling wine is much more affordable than champagne and is thus more accessible to all wine lovers.  In many cases, a good Prosecco is far superior to a mid-range Champagne, but it is a fraction of the price.  The higher quality available has made sparkling wine an acceptable, budget-friendly choice for celebrations that would usually call for champagne.

Apart from celebrations, the increase in consumption of sparkling wine is also due to a new tendency to enjoy sparkling wine for everyday sipping and with meals, rather than reserving it for special occasions.  While it still adds a special sparkle to celebrations, it is also a delicious, everyday treat that complements many foods very well.

So, yes you should pop the cork on a bottle of sparkling wine on New Year’s Eve, or for your upcoming romantic Valentine’s Day, but don’t hesitate to enjoy a little bubbly any time it strikes your fancy.  You will certainly be in good company.

Vine Advisor - A Site for Sharing

Drinking a fine bottle of wine is an enjoyment that is best shared with family, friends and guests. It is more than simply a beverage; it is an enticing treat, a complement to a delicious meal and, if it is a truly extraordinary wine, an almost magical experience. Such an experience deserves to be shared, not just with those who were there to savor the wine with you, but also with those who will enjoy hearing about it and possibly want to try it as well.

Vine Advisor is a site made for just that type of sharing. It is a wine community, where users can register and post reviews about wines they've tried and even share stories about meals and celebrations they've experienced, most likely with wine to accompany them!

wine advisor is also a resource for wine lovers of all levels of expertise. The wine aficionado who has a lot to say about the subtle nuances of a particular wine can describe it in detail and allow others to learn from him as their Wine Advisor. The casual wine drinker who simply knows what he likes can post a more general review describing the wine in his own words and give it a rating out of five stars. Users can post photos of the wine along with their reviews as well.

If you are simply searching for a good wine to try, you can use the search filters to narrow your search by region, varietal, color, sweetness, food pairing, country and winery. So, if you know you don’t care for white wine, set the color filter to red and go from there.  You may discover a fabulous new wine that you might not have tried otherwise.

Planning a trip? There is also a geographic listing of wineries around the world, so stop on Vine Advisor first to plan your tour of the local wineries at your destination. The interactive map allows you to search for wineries in a particular country with a simple click and, once you've visited, you can rate the wines and the wineries too.  For each winery, there is a list of their wines and photos of the bottles. Suggested food pairings are also offered.

The FAQs page on Vine Advisor answers questions about topics such as wine terminology, how to serve wine and even the health benefits of red wine. For instance, did you know that red wine contains antioxidants in red wine can help lower cholesterol, protect your heart and boost your brain.

As more people visit this interactive wine community and post their reviews, stories and experiences, the site becomes ever more interesting and helpful. A true wine community that is waiting to welcome you in.
